Design & Engineering Insights: Hyliion Hypertruck ERX Extends Range of Electric Powered Trucks

By combining an electric drivetrain and a natural gas-powered onboard generator, the Hypertruck ERX can provide a range of over 1,000 miles.

Hyliion recently announced the launch of its Hypertruck Electric Range Extender (ERX), a long-haul, fully electric powertrain which combines a fully electric drivetrain and a natural gas-powered onboard generator to recharge the battery. According to Thomas Healy, CEO, Hyliion, and Patrick Sexton, Chief Technology Officer at Hyliion, this powertrain provides a range of over 1,000 miles.

Sexton says the system uses fully validated, off-the-shelf technologies which helps customers feel more comfortable utilizing the system. He notes it is a very robust solution, as well, ensuring its longevity.

Healy notes the Hypertruck ERX is suited for long haul applications because of the range it can provide and the infrastructure that is already in place for natural gas refueling. In addition, natural gas is already a low-cost option, making it feasible for fleets to utilize the Hyliion technology today.
